Lake Natron - ein See in Gefahr

In der Trockenzeit ist er eigentlich nicht besonders groß. Trotzdem ist der Lake Natron etwas ganz Besonderes. Durch die Nähe zu dem noch aktiven Vulkan Ol Doinyo Lengai ist er nämlich angereichert mit Soda. In besonders trockenen Jahren verleiht ihm das ein faszinierendes Aussehen – dann nimmt er nämlich durch Purpurbakterien bedingt eine rötliche Färbung an und aufgrund der aufreisenden Salzkruste ein Wabenmuster. Abgesehen davon ist er eine der weltweit größten Brutstätten für Flamingos. Jeden Oktober kommen die Flamingos ganz Tanzanias und aus weiteren Ländern hier her, um ihre Eier abzulegen. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt versammeln sich hier Millionen an Flamingos. Doch all das ist in Gefahr. Der wohl weltweit größte Vorrat an Sodaasche, der im See lagert und ihn zu dem macht, was er ist, ist gleichzeitig auch sein Fluch. Die Regierung plant nämlich am Lake Natron eine große Sodafabrik, die nicht nur den See, sondern mit der geplantetn Zufahrtsstraße mitten durch die Serengeti auch den weltberühmten Nationalpark mit seinem Tierleben stark beeinträchtigt. Außerdem sollen eine Eisenbahnlinie und Pipelines zur Sodafarbik gebaut werden und zusätzlich werden ein Kraftwerk und Wohnsiedlungen für über 1000 Arbeiter die Wildniss und Schönheit rund um den Lake Natron und den Ol Doinyo Lengai zerstören. Wie groß diese Zerstörung sein wird,  kann man sich gar nicht vorstellen. Nicht nur die Flamingosbestände wird es empfndlich treffen, es wird auch ein wunderschönes Stück Land, wie man es kaum noch wo findet auf dieser Welt, vernichten. 

In the dry period Lake Natron really isn’t that big. But still lake Natron is something very special. Size really isn’t everything. Because of the near to the active volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai it is believed it is the worldwide biggest reserve of soda. In dry years bacteria are coloring the water red and the salt builds a fascinating structure. It must be so beautiful! Besides it is one of the biggest breeding place of flamingos. Millions of flamingos from all over Tanzania and it’s neighboring countries are coming here every October to lay their eggs. But all of that is in great danger. The government is planning a soda factory next to lake Natron to get the soda which is used to produce glass and in the chemical industry. The huge soda fabric wouldn’t just endanger the flamingos, also the planned huge highway through the Serengeti towards the factory will endager the famous Nationalpark with it’s animals. Besides the planned power plant and the villages for over 1000 workers will destroy the beauty and wilderness around lake Natron and Ol Doinyo Lengai. How huge the effects will be you can’t imagine. It’s not just the flamingos and Serengeti, it is also a wonderful peace of land you won’t find again on this earth which will be destroyed.

 Das Land um den Lake Natron ist so karg, dass auch die Kühe Mühe haben, etwas zu finden. Anbau von Obst und Gemüse ist nicht möglich.
